How to buy a laptop battery

When purchasing a battery for your notebook computer, the first thing a consumer should look for is the reputability of the product at mind. If the product is made by the manufacturer of your laptop (i.e. Sony, Compaq, Dell, etc), you can usually be sure it is a quality product. However, many manufactures do not actually manufacturer, instead they are the brander of the product. For example, if you open up a genuineibm-thinkpad-t23-battery, you may find that the power cells inside are actually made by Toshiba, Panasonic, or a similar big name company. Sony in this case has just made the plastic case of the battery. This goes to show that the brand of the battery you are buying does not necessarily mean that the quality is superior. Many third party brands use the exact same power cells as original manufacturers. Using a third party manufacturer is often a good way to go when buying a battery, as there are usually many extra benefits. For instance, most third party batteries are much lower in price than original manufacturers’ batteries. Secondly, they usually offer a superior warranty, as they realize that in order to win the consumer’s confidence; they must stand behind their product. A one year warranty is a must. Don’t buy any battery with a warranty less than one year. Batteries have been known to die early, and a three month warranty could leave you high and dry.
The next main thing a consumer should look for is the type of ibm Thinkpad A30 battery. Batteries can be made using several chemicals. For laptops, there are four main types. They are Ni-Cad, Ni-MH, Li-Ion, and Li-Poly. There is no major manufacturer that still makes Ni-Cad laptop batteries, as they are a very old and primitive type of power. Ni-MH is newer and more advanced, but is not as good as its Li-Ion and Li-Poly counterparts. If we compare the last three types (Ni-MH, Li-Ion, Li-Poly), we find that Ni-MH batteries weigh more than the other two, but produce less current than the other two. Li-Ion and Li-Poly are the most advanced types of batteries on the market, and you should try to get one of these two types if possible. Most laptops that come with one type of battery can not use any other type of ibm-thinkpad-t21-battery, meaning that if your laptop came with a Ni-Cad, it must be replaced by another Ni-Cad. The same goes for the other types. Please note that in some cases, this does not apply. Some laptops that come with a Ni-MH battery can be replaced with a stronger Li-Ion one.
Lastly you must look at the power rating of the item you’re buying. As technology advances, so do power ratings. The battery you bought last year may be twice as strong this year, and might even be the same physical size. Batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes. Because laptop batteries do not carry a very large amount of power when compared to larger batteries such as car batteries, most companies show their ratings with Volts and Milliamperes. One thousand Milliamperes equals 1 Ampere. When buying a battery, always go for the battery with the most Milliamperes (or mAh). Batteries are also rated by Watt-Hours, perhaps the simplest rating of all. This is found by multiplying the Volts and the Amperes together. We will now show you an example of finding the Watt-Hours for our example battery.
Our example battery is 14.4 Volts, 3600mAh
(remember that 3600mAh is equal to 3.6 Amperes).
14.4 x 3.6 = 51.84
This battery has 51.84 Watt-Hours. The term Watt Hour signifies the energy needed to power one watt for one hour. Thus this battery can power 51.84 watts for one hour. Suppose your laptop runs at 25.92 watts (this may be unlikely, but let’s use this just for simplicity). This ibm-thinkpad-t22-battery could power your laptop for 2 hours. People usually associate the word ‘Watts’ with light bulbs, and yes, this battery could power a 40 watt light bulb for about an hour and 18 minutes, a 60 watt light bulb for about 52 minutes, or a 100 watt light bulb for 31 minutes; it’s the same idea.
The reason we have shown you watt-hours is because oftentimes the volts and Amperes vary. For example our laptop that uses a Li-Ion 14.4 Volt, 3600mAh battery may use a NI-MH battery that is 9.6 Volts, 4000mAh. Now let’s do the math and find out which battery is stronger.
Li-Ion: 14.4 Volts x 3.6 Amperes = 51.84 Watt Hours
Ni-MH: 9.6 Volts x 4 Amperes = 38.4 Watt Hours
The Li-Ion is stronger.

Dead iPad battery? Never mind replacing it, Apple just sends another iPad for $99

Whoa, Nelly! Isn’t this something? Apple has just posted details on its iPad battery replacement service, which is really not a battery replacement service at all. Check out the company’s opening line:

“If your iPad requires service due to the battery’s diminished ability to hold an electrical charge, Apple will replace your iPad for a service fee.”

Now, let’s compare that to the verbiage found in the iPhone’s battery replacement program details:

“If your iPhone requires service only because the battery’s ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, Apple will service your iPhone for a service fee.”

We can see the puzzled look on your face from here, and we’re sharing in the same disbelief. Apple is actually saying that it won’t bother cracking open your withered iPad, replacing the battery and sending it back your way; instead, you’ll pay $105.95 (including shipping) for a completely different iPad, which certainly has its pros and cons. On one hand, you’re getting a new (or potentially refurbished, actually) iPad in around “one week,” but on the other, you’ll be waving goodbye to every morsel of personal data on the device that you send in — unless you backup beforehand, of course. Here’s Apple’s take on answering “will the data on my iPad be preserved?”

“No. You will receive a replacement iPad that will not contain any of your personal data. Before you submit your iPad for service, it is important to sync your iPad with iTunes to back up your contacts, calendars, email account settings, bookmarks, apps, etc. Apple is not responsible for the loss of information when servicing your iPad.”

Lovely, don’tcha think? Head on past the break for the full text.

[Thanks, David]

8 cell Replacement Dell Inspiron Mini 9 battery reviewed

Following in the long tradition of big, ugly battery makers, it looks like some folks have decided to create a super high capacity battery for the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook. The highest capacity battery Dell sells for this machine has 4 cells. But you can pick up a third party 8 cell Dell Inspiron Mini 9 battery on laptopbatteriesinc.com.au.

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 battery Specifications:
Cell Type:Li-ion
Voltage:14.8V
Capacity:4400mAh
Cells:8 cell
Weight:485g
Color:black
Dimensions:14 x 9.89 x 2 mm
Condition: brand new,replacement,100% OEM compatible
Dell Inspiron Mini 9 battery Compatible original Battery Code:

  • 312-0831
  • D044H
  • W953G

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 battery Fits Models:

  • Inspiron Mini 9
  • Inspiron Mini 9N
  • Inspiron 910

The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 battery typically ships with a 4 cell battery. But laptopbatteriesinc.com.au offers an 8 cell, 44000mAh battery that should last for up to 10 hours. The company warns that the battery works best with netbooks using the A04 or earlier BIOS versions. If you use the A05 BIOS you may have some problems charging or recognizing the battery.

A member of the MyDellMini forums
picked one up and ran a few tests. Using the Battery Eater Pro test, the battery ran for about five and a half hours, but that test is meant to put some extra stress on your system. When he tried browsing the web and doing some other light activity the battery managed to last about eight and a half hours.

Now, you have to be careful when ordering third party batteries from eBay. Sometimes the results aren’t quite as good. But it looks like this high capacity Dell laptop battery could be a winner.Your results may vary.

Acer Aspire 1520 battery Performance

[Acer Aspire 1520 battery]NiCd, Li-Ion, and NiMH are all different types of battery and as such vary in both user performance and durability. Performance also varies slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer depending on the quality of cells that form the battery. Under normal laptop use you should expect a good quality Li-Ion battery to last for around 1000 cycles (approximately 3 years) with NiMH around 500 cycles, and NiCd being the least efficient performer at around 400 cycles.

The type of application you are using on your laptop will also have a dramatic effect on the run time of your battery. For instance playing a dvd or rendering images would consume more battery power than say editing a simple word document. In addition the type of laptop you have will affect battery performance, for instance a larger brighter screen, lower ram size, or power hungry processor may give you more speed, but like a car this extra speed consumes more energy.Â

Monitoring your laptops power settings allows you to enhance your batteries perfomance by taking advantage of your laptop’s energy saving mode. Microsoft Windows includes two power settings created specifically to improve the performance of laptop computers. The Laptop setting minimizes power usage to conserve your battery, but at the same time adjusts itself to suit your laptops processing requirements, this way performance is not affected. The second setting called “Max Batteryâ€? minimises power consumption and is designed for situations that require lower processing power such as viewing documents or browsing the Internet.[Acer Aspire 1610 battery]

Technology is moving at a rapid pace and manufactures are improving the performance of all laptops helping to make mobile computing more consumer friendly as is demonstrated by say the release of the  Intel Centrino 2 processor which offers a significant improvement to battery performance  with run times reaching on average up-to 4 hours on a standard laptop. To achieve even greater battery performance you should consider an ultra portable laptop from Acer, Toshiba, or Sony etc which will give you 7-8 hours of computing time on just one charge.

For overall best battery performance disconnect your battery when you are using your laptop for a prolonged period connect to a mains supply, keeping it safely stored in a cool dry place preferably around 15 degrees centigrade. Remember though the older your battery the less run time you should expect.[Acer Aspire 1620 battery]

Acer TravelMate 2000 battery Care

[Acer TravelMate 2000 battery]Whenever you buy a new laptop or a laptop battery the battery will normally need to be completely charged before it can be used, as it will arrive in a discharged condition. To fully charge your battery we recommend leaving your laptop connected to a suitable mains supply overnight for at least 12 hours if the laptop battery you have purchased is either a NiCd or Li-Ion type. If your battery is of the NiMH type we recommend leaving your battery on charge for up-to 24 hours.

It is worth bearing in mind that NiCd or NiMH  batteries will not reach their peak condition or full capacity until they have been charged and discharged 4 or 5 time through normal use, so please do not be alarmed if your battery does not initially last as long as the manufacturer has specified. These types of battery should always be fully discharged before charging where possible as they become conditioned to remember how long they should last.[Acer TravelMate 2500 battery] For instance if you only use 50% of your batteries capacity and constantly top up the charge from this point, the battery will sooner or later presume it should only last 50% of its original capacity even if your completely discharge and recharge.

Most new laptops will come with a Li-Ion battery, as it is a more effective and consumer friendly product. Li-Ion batteries work in a completely different way and do not remember charging history, in fact they perform best being kept topped up to full capacity, ideally doing so from around a 50% charge.

How to use your Acer travelmate 2490 battery?

To better use of your laptop battery, please take care of the precautions listed below:

1. New Acer travelmate 2490 battery usually maintains a discharged condition with very low capacity. It is highly recommended to fully charge new battery packs before using.

2. The new Acer aspire one battery pack needs to be circled (fully discharged and recharged) three to five times to reach its optimum performance.

3. Acer aspire one laptop battery will undergo self-discharging when left unused for a long period of time. Thus, it should always be stored in a fully charged state and kept in a cool, dry and clean place.

4. To maintain the optimum performance of Acer aspire one battery pack, it is highly recommended to circle (fully discharging and recharging) it at least once a month.

5. It is normal if the new acer travelmate 290 battery gets warm when being charged or used. However, please pay special attention if the battery pack becomes excessively hot. This may indicate there is a problem with the charging circuit of the electronic device. Please consult a qualified technician if necessary.

6. New batteries are hard to be charged. Sometimes, your electronic device may indicate a fully charged condition about 10 to 15 minutes when Acer aspire one battery pack is being charged for the first time. When this happens, remove the battery pack and let it cool down for about 10 to 15 minutes then repeat the charging procedure. Sometimes, the new Aspire one battery will suddenly refuse to be charged. If this happens, a suggested solution is trying to remove the battery from the device and insert it again.

I think if you know these, you can make better use of your acer aspire 5680 battery and make its longevity longer.

What Should I Consider When Buying a Laptop Battery

There are many laptop battery manufacturers, and even more retailers to buy your laptop battery from. However, your biggest concern in purchasing a laptop battery will be to choose the battery that fits your computer. For this you will need to know the make and model number of your laptop; if you don’t know this offhand or don’t have the necessary paperwork, check the inside of your laptop’s battery compartment while the computer is off and unplugged. There you should find the model number, along with some other information. You may also find the part number of your laptop battery, located on the casing of the battery itself.

When buying a laptop battery, you will probably only have one or two choices that fit your computer. Choose the battery with the longest life available for your computer. There are several different kinds of laptop batteries; because the technologies of each are very different, a laptop must be designed specifically for the type of battery it uses. Most laptops are only designed to use one type of battery technology.

The nickel cadmium battery, known as NiCad (pronounced “Nigh-Kad”), used to be the most common type of laptop battery. Nickel cadmium batteries couldn’t hold very much power by today’s standards, and could only be charged a limited number of times. NiCad batteries could easily be ruined by being left on the charger after they had reached full charge, or by being recharged before they were completely dead. The latter problem, called the “memory effect,” meant that if you recharged your laptop battery before it had run completely down, it would remember the point at which you put it back on the charger, and only discharge that far the next time you used it.

The nickel metal hydride (NiMH) laptop battery was the next step up from NiCad. NiMH batteries could hold considerably more power than NiCad, but they still had something of a memory effect — although it wasn’t as pronounced. Lithium ion (Li-Ion) is the latest technology for laptop batteries; although Li-Ion batteries hold about the same amount of power as NiMH, they are considerably lighter and far superior. The Li-Ion laptop battery doesn’t have a memory effect and lasts considerably longer than its predecessors. If your laptop supports multiple types of batteries, and the Li-Ion is one of them, then you should choose the Li-Ion as the best type of battery available for your laptop.

Regardless of which type you have, it’s important to properly care for your laptop battery, in order to get as much life out of it as possible. “Conditioning,” which means fully discharging and then fully charging the battery, should be done at least every few weeks, as it maintains the full capacity of the laptop battery. Some authorities claim that this is not necessary with Li-Ion batteries, while others maintain that it’s a good idea to condition all laptop batteries regularly, rather than simply leaving them plugged into the wall at all times. Your laptop battery should never be stored in an area that drops below 50ºF (10ºC) or rises above 95ºF (35ºC); this means that your laptop should not be left in the car or in a storage area that is not climate controlled. Also, for extended storage of six months or more, the laptop battery should be discharged to 50% capacity and removed from the computer; a battery stored for an extended period of time at full capacity may lose the ability to charge fully, while a battery stored in a fully discharged state may never be able to charge again at all.
